Self storage cost: compare quotes and cash before refunds

Compare two complete storage quotes and distinguish final cost from cash advanced before a confirmed refund.

A lower self storage cost can still mean advancing more cash before a refund arrives. For a short gap between homes, compare two provider-confirmed quotes for the same required storage period, including separate extras and both moving legs. Use Australian dollars (AUD) throughout.

This comparison takes the full billed rental amount from your quote. It does not work out contract dates, rates or refund rights. Obtain confirmation of every amount and its inclusion first. A blank means unknown, not free; refund timing can remain unknown even when the quoted amounts are confirmed.

Storage quote cost and cash advanced

Confirmed full quotes only. Enter every amount. Zero means checked; unknown timing means unknown peak.

First group = full rent + separate extras + deposit + move-in cash. Refunds must be cash from entered payments only; no credits or past/external-payment refunds. Confirm the complete order. Inputs do not establish refund rights or a bank balance requirement.

This tool runs in your browser. Your entries are not sent or saved. All amounts are in Australian dollars (AUD).

Load example fills hypothetical figures. They are not current rates or recommendations.

Are both quotes covering the storage you actually need?

Write down when your belongings need to enter and leave storage. Then ask each provider to confirm the full rental amount it will bill for that request, including any payment that falls outside the physical storage period. Do not substitute a headline monthly rate.

Check that both spaces have suitable capacity, access and availability for the same required period. A cheap space that cannot hold your belongings or cannot be accessed when needed is not an equivalent option. The confirmation control records your check; the calculator cannot verify it.

Keep your own note of the quoted billing end and payment sequence. If these are unclear, ask the provider before comparing. The article does not interpret a notice clause, shorten a charged period or decide which contractual condition applies to you.

Which amounts belong in the six cash fields?

Use the same boundaries for both quotes. Each payment belongs in one place only. If a rental quote includes cover or another charge, do not add it again under extras. Include separately payable moving costs in the appropriate inward or outward field.

Confirmed quote inputs for one complete storage request, AUD
FieldWhat to enter
Full rental totalWhole billed rent confirmed by the provider, not a rate to multiply.
Separate extrasCover and fees payable separately and not counted elsewhere.
Separate deposit paidRefundable cash payment not already inside the rental total or extras.
Move-in cashSeparately payable transport into storage.
Move-out cashSeparately payable transport out of storage.
Confirmed cash refundCash to be returned from payments in this comparison, confirmed separately.

A deposit already included in the full rental quote stays there; its separate deposit field is zero after checking. A confirmed cash refund of that payment can still appear in the refund field. Never add the same deposit twice just because it has a separate line on a document.

A store credit, discount or promised future service is not a cash refund. Nor does a past payment outside this new comparison belong here. The refund must relate to the payments entered for this request. Keep conditional or unconfirmed entitlements out of a completed comparison.

Enter zero only when you have checked that nothing is separately payable or refundable in that field. If an amount is unknown, leave it blank and obtain confirmation. The tool requires every amount and both quote confirmations before it produces a comparison.

What is the difference between final cost and cash advanced?

Gross payments are the rental total, separate extras, separately paid deposit and both moving payments added together. Final cost subtracts the confirmed cash refund from those payments. It describes your confirmed inputs, not a prediction that the refund will arrive.

Peak transaction advance means the largest cumulative amount paid less cash refunds received at that stage of the selected sequence. A refundable payment can increase that advance without increasing final cost. The output is not a minimum bank balance or a household affordability assessment.

The calculator accepts only two complete patterns for a numeric peak. Choose one only after checking that every payment and refund fits it. Unknown dates or an uncertain same-day order cannot be made certain by selecting a convenient option.

  • All payments, then refund block: every entered payment happens before the refund. Peak transaction advance equals gross payments.
  • First group, refund block, move-out cash: rent, extras, deposit and inward moving cash are all paid first. The complete refund then arrives before the entire outward moving payment.
  • Unknown or unsuitable: interleaved payments and refunds, partly paid outward transport, missing order or another pattern leave the peak unknown.

You may group consecutive cash refunds into one refund block only if no payment occurs between them. A refund block can contain several receipts, but all must occur within the selected stage. Do not use the first-group pattern if some rent or extras are paid later.

For the first-group pattern, add rent, extras, deposit and move-in cash to get S1. Subtract the refund, then add move-out cash to get final cost. Peak advance is the larger of S1 and final cost, because no other payment happens between those stages.

The refund cannot exceed payments made before its selected stage. The tool rejects a larger amount rather than treating a refund of some older payment as spare cash for this comparison. With unknown timing, a refund still cannot exceed total entered payments.

Can the lower final cost require more cash first?

This hypothetical example uses invented inputs for calculation practice, not current provider prices or typical fees. Both quotes cover the same required storage request. Assume all payments happen before each confirmed cash-refund block; the figures do not establish actual refund receipt.

A pays 220 + 30 + 400 + 80 + 70 = AUD 800, then subtracts AUD 400 to reach AUD 400. B pays 260 + 40 + 100 + 80 + 70 = AUD 550, then subtracts AUD 100 to reach AUD 450.

A minus B is AUD −50 in final cost, but A advances AUD 250 more before its refund. These are different questions. A lower final figure alone does not establish that you can meet the payments when required, or that the two storage options suit you equally.

What changes if only the refund order changes?

Keep every A amount unchanged but move its complete refund block between the first group and outward moving payment. S1 is 220 + 30 + 400 + 80 = AUD 730. After the AUD 400 refund, AUD 330 remains advanced; paying AUD 70 brings the final amount to AUD 400.

Peak transaction advance becomes max(730, 400) = AUD 730, not AUD 800. Final cost remains AUD 400. Only the confirmed order changed. If the order is unknown instead, the same confirmed amounts still give final cost AUD 400, but the peak result reads Unknown.

For a cents check, hypothetical A inputs of 220.15, 30.25, 400, 80.10 and 70.35 give gross payments AUD 800.85. A confirmed refund of AUD 400 leaves AUD 400.85. In the first-group pattern S1 is AUD 730.50, which is also the peak.

How does the calculation handle cents and invalid entries?

All amount fields accept AUD 0 to 1,000,000 with at most two decimal places. These are calculation limits, not price ranges. Values are converted to integer cents before addition. No rate, daily charge, distance formula or provider default is applied.

Blank, negative, non-numeric, over-limit or over-precision entries prevent a result. A checked zero is allowed. Changing an input hides the previous result until you calculate again. Load example only fills hypothetical inputs; Clear empties them and restores unconfirmed options.

When does this comparison not fit?

Do not use this model to calculate an unknown rental charge, establish a refund right or decide whether a storage contract can be ended. It also does not compare cancellation of an existing booking with a new booking, or refunds from previously paid transactions.

The numeric peak does not fit a sequence with payments between refund receipts, a partly paid moving bill or an uncertain transaction order. Keep timing set to Unknown. If the cash refund amount itself is conditional or unconfirmed, leave that amount blank rather than generating a completed result.

Payment arrangements outside the entered cash payments, such as borrowed funds or cash already held elsewhere, are not modelled. The peak is a transaction advance for the stated pattern, not your actual bank position. Review wider affordability separately in the Australian household budget guide.

Quick decision checklist

  • Do both quotes meet the same required period, suitable capacity and access?
  • Has the provider confirmed the whole billed rent and have included fees or deposits been counted only once?
  • Are both moving payments and any cash refund confirmed, with unknown amounts left blank?
  • Does the entire transaction sequence fit a supported pattern, or should peak advance stay unknown?

Where can you confirm your own quoted conditions?

Use the current provider documents as confirmation starting points, alongside your actual quote and direct provider response. This article keeps no provider policy or pricing table and does not apply those documents to work out your charge, billing end or refund entitlement.
